okay, strange title, but the question wouldn't fit in the box. so, what band has got you so excited that "at last they're bringing out another album! and it's about time!", only to release the first song of it, and it's a piece of crap! or it's not at all what the hype led you to believe what the album would be like, and had you wondering if the band had lost the magic they once had?

mine is the new album from GunsN Roses, "Chinese Demokrocy", i mean, after multiple years of waiting, they finally give us a release date for it, and, then release a lemin of a first song, and, it's the title song of the album. i don't kno if that makes it worse, or what, but i personally, don't like what it sounds like (after 3 listens), and for the record, i'm a huge! GunsN roses fan.

Boston did this. they took almost 10 years to make another alblum and it just didn't measure up. I also was disappointed in AC.DC'S stiff upper lip.

want a real fucking disappointment? meatloaf live! what a fucking trash. he sounds great on album, but get him live and he can't sing, he's as limp as a used teabag and has as much stage presence as a pea. end of rant.

Wow, I can thik of a few.
Maroon 5 (incidentally): their ne album "it won't be soon before long" does not do it for me, the songs are less catchy and more predictable, the spark is gone, their first album was really good.
Suede: - a New Morning, it took them 3 or 4 years, the album was absolute rubbish, even if the musicianship on it is superb, Richard Oaks's guitar playing is world class, but Brett Anderson blew it with horrible lyrics and uninteresting melodies (Obsessions, track #2 is an exception, at least the album had one good track)
Smashing Pumpkins - Machina, the Machines of God, they finally kind of lost it, and Billy Corgans solo projects didn't do it for me either, but then again I may be expected too much from S.P. they were one of the best bands of the 90s.
Blur - Blur (but only initially, that album grew on me a lot so today I wouldn't say it let me down).
Oasis - Standing on the Sholders of Giants (just not a good album).
Korn - everything after Life is Peachy is rubbish.
Snow Patrol - a Hundred Million Suns (the new album), it's big commercial and uninspired, even if I really like their older stuff.
Coldplay - X&Y, an awful record, fortunately their new album is quite a bit better.

It's hard to makemusic, sometimes the spark is not there, sometimes you either run the risk of repeating yourself so much you become amockery of your former self, or you try to change direction so drastically and explore new things the album becomes a musical journey for you, which may be interesting, but boring to the average listener, even to one of your biggest fans. I just thank any artist who manages to make one good song, let alone a good album. It's a major achievement, I don't know if I'll ever be able to myself but will definitely keep trying. So I think criticizing new albums is often a bit hard to do and might not really do anything for the artist.
Also some of the best albums in the world do not translate well on first listen, not even on the second one. Both Massive Attack's Mezzanine and Radiohead's OK Computer (and really all their albums) initially seem self important and unmelodic even, but after a few listens (speaking for me personally) they unravel an endless amount of fascinating details, the melodies prove to be brilliant and lodge themselves on your brain or they create a mood and atmosphere that is something special for you. I think one really neesd to make an effort to properly listen a few times to albums before writing them off, some are disposable enjoyment, some are intricate listening exercises.
I think Green Day, for instance is excellent party music, fun radio music and instantly catchy, but I never find myelf listening to them when I want a really chill atmospheric record, and it doesn't mean I think they're bad, in fact I think they're awesome, especially live. I ahve found though, that if it takes a band more than 3 years to make an album, often it seems to be due to a lack of creativity or interest rather than perfectionism so albums like the Chinese Democracy I have little to no hope for. Massive Attack and Radiohead are happy exceptions to this rule, so far.

cheers

i gotta agree on Maroon five's new album. as much as i like them, (hell i use them as my user name), i have to say, that the only song that even comes close to being good is, "i won't go home without you". it's not as bad as GunsN Roses's "Chinese Demokracy" is, or will be, and it didn't really produce a lemon of a first single, but, i wasn't happy with their second album, all the same. it's all very well and good if a band does what Matchbox 20, and a few others did, and take a few years off so they don't burn out, but to make the album over multiple years, or make it and not release it for said multiple years, sort of makes you wonder if the band really is into what they do anymore, or if the magic that once was there, is no longer in the hearts of the musicians. yeah, the album can still suck if the band comes back from having a break with an album that blows, but, chances are that because they had the break they may release something wich they're truly passionat about, and will at least try and make it better then the last album.

btw, i love beer, wich Metallica album?

Post 9 by soaring eagle (flying high again!) on Tuesday, 28-Oct-2008 8:21:05

I didn't like the second matchbox 20 disk. the first one kicks ass! I personally don't like the new metallica, I don't know about the latest album but the first one with the new bass player just didn't have the drive and heavy sound that I like.

If, by new Metallica, you mean Death Magnetic, I hve to say, for myself, I like it better than anything they've done since the black album. It's not to say they manage to catch their crazyness of yesteryear and their hay day but, for instance, the last track is just return to form for the old guys and the first two are excellent as well. May be I have changed and this genre does not appeal to me like it used to but this album stil has glimpses of the adrenaline charged madness that appealed to me and probably does appeal to most teenage guys, and some girls.
An album that really surprised me is Pink's new abum, haven't really listened to her much but these are a good bunch of songs I must say.

hmmm, i really have to disagree on the Metallica thing. yeah, the base player they had for one of their albums wasn't the best, but i think he was just a fill in, (haven't actually looked to see, so maybe wrong on that). i actually like their newest album, but not as well as the black album. so, you could say that i'm one of thoes girls that absolutely love Metallica. lmao

I will have to try the new album then. I thought the other person joined cause Jason had left? if I am incorrect sorry! I actually liked garage ink the remakes were pretty good and different.
Another band that let me down on their second disk was the outfield. Play deep was so damn awesome. They have gotten better as I have four disks by now, but the second one, banging was just not good to me.

Post 13 by maroon five (I'm going for the prolific poster awards!) on Friday, 31-Oct-2008 2:53:49

lol who knows. Jason and James always have falling outs, then he's back in the band....if one was a woman you'd sware they were married. lmao, like i said, haven't looked on the Metallica sight to see yet. hmmm, really should do that lol.

Expecting something good at all from guns n roses is like expecting to find the pope in a brothel. Axal rose is a retarded puddle of liquid shit, spraying from the arse of a mentally chalenged rat. Instead of trying to sing, maybe he should try and rip his own windpipe out, and do us all a favour. I'd be more than happy to help the whining little fucker with that. In fact, it'd probably be the most exhilearating feeling of my life.
um anyway, i have an irrassional hatred of axal rose. Can anybody tell?

I was looking forward to Aly and AJ's new Christmas album a couple of years ago. Quite frankly, it sucks. The only song I actually like is, "I'll be Home for Christmas." Otherwise, the arrangements bored the hell out of me. Well, okay, the first song was okay, but I can't play it over and over again.
